November Photo Topic - Your favorite railway pictures

a_batey's picture

As discussed in another topic i decided to make a move and create something. Feel free to add / surgest other rules.

Anyway a few things to think of. Watch the size of your pictures so they don't need to be re-sized by a mod. Pictures must be of your own or you should have permission to post other persons photos.

[Mod note: Corrected typo in title. - BDC]

Topic for November - Your favorite railway pictures.

And here are my few modeling ones.

The first is my first layout that has been past on to my friends son.

Gallery Issues - Post Here

Don't know if it is related to the server issues, but yesterday when I checked the gallery everything seemed fine. Today I am finding empty albums.

So if anyone is finding their album is amiss, please let us know,

Moving To New Server (and possibly new ownership)

Admin's picture

The smart people are done looking at the server. Their diagnosis is to upgrade the OS and add two more megabytes of ram. The good news is that to accomplish this feat, we need to move to a new server. Why is that good you ask? It is good because our server is less expensive now, and the only way to pay the current market value is to move to another physical box. Of course there is a catch, if we add the suggested amount of ram, then we will be paying 40 dollars more than our current bill. We are barely making it on advertising revenue so we still might have a performance issue even after moving to new hardware (without adding the increased ram).

Another issue is that I really am not in any shape to take care of this site anymore. I really haven't been much help for quite some time. So with that in mind, 5 days after our 5th anniversary, I am offering the site up for sale. I have not spoken to any of my moderaters or Bryan about this yet. They get first right of refusal on taking over the site. If none of them want to take on the financial responsibility, then the offer for sale will be open to the public.

If you, or someone you know, would be capable of handling the responsiblity this site requires, please contact me at: todd (dot) vaules (at) hotmail (dot) com.

Thanks to everyone that has had the patience to put up the the techincal issues this site has endured over the past months. This is a great community and my hopes are that this site will continue for at least another five years while maintaining the excellence that it's members have endowed upon it.

The move to the new server will happen as early as this evening. Please pardon our mess during the move.

My Warmest Regards and Thanks,

Todd Vaules

Last weeks modeling work - Coni Weathering

a_batey's picture

Just thought i would put a few pics of last weeks work. A weathered coni with a new coal load. Didn't get a chance to do anything this weekend as i went away for a break fly fishing.

Ill be back into it tomorrow with a bachman 4-8-2 to weather. Also going to be very busy over the next few months with bunch of laser kits coming to make (bar mills and branchline). I plan to make construction threads and photograph them as i build if anyone is interested.

Anyway the pics.

truck loading/unloading facility

CSX1542's picture

Ok so I would like change a facility on my railroad to a truck loading/unloading facility and I would like to "pave" the area around the facility including the area around the rails. In other words i would like the typ of faciltity where the paving is the same height as the railhead around and in between the rail, hopefully this makes sense. What materials or material would be best to accomplish this? Hopefully a material that I can get a smooth asphalt finish with but that doesnt matter that much.

Micro-Trains N scale converted wood-chip gondola

Trainster's picture

Any ideas on how to make the wood-chips more realistic? I have never seen n scale wood chips or an idea of what to use. Anybody have an idea? Maybe weathering, I don't know, the chip insert just looks hokey.

New Layout Design and would like people to tell me whats wrong with it.

a_batey's picture

Hey Guys im in the process of desinging a new layout and thought i would post up the plan and get a few of you to offer your advice and tell me what could be done better. Its always better to have more then one set of eyes.

Anyway A bit of background on it. firstly it is designed to wrap around an 600mm concrete wall in my unit with two modules on either side and an end one connecting them. It is desgned to give two 2 metre by half metre modules and the end connecting one.

I plan to scenic the two large models first.

Meanwhile, back in the city...

Jimmi's picture

If anyone remembers earlier pictures of my City of Saint Barbara, you may note that I never showed the other side of town. That's because there was nothing there. So, over the past several weeks I have been constructing new buildings and rehabilitating some old structures to populate the other main street in town, Schuylkill Avenue. I have a couple of quick shots here and I'll try to get some better pictures later.

This is a view from the yard level looking up at the city. Constructed the bridge from a piece of foam board and some strips of wood.

The new Server is up.

Bryan's picture

We're now running on the new Server.

Please be patient whilst we find and tie up any loose ends.

Feel free to post anything you find that's not working properly.

Thanks,

Prairie State Railroad Company

PSRCPresident's picture

Well, This posting is to announce my new, future N scale model railroad layout: The Prairie State Railroad Company. The PSRC is a railroad that is completely contained within the State of Illinois and moves primarily freight. We left the passenger trains to those larger lines with their fancy streamliners, we move freight, more money to be made). The PSRC is set in late 1954 and is still primarily steam powered. Mainline steam power consists of "NKP-look-alike" 2-8-4s with cosmetic changes to give them a different look, USRA 2-8-2, 4-6-2, 4-8-2 and 2-10-2s

best passenger station

Wired's picture

My new layout is going to need a passenger station. I already got a Clarksville Depot and another lil Walthers builtups depot... but their both nice small stations. I need a major station.

Time period is mid 50's, but I'm pretty flex at this point.

any recomendations for a kit?

Tidying Up The Site

I’m going to be spending some time tidying up the site. This site has been online for over 2 years now and have officially published 112 articles! During that time I’ve found that there are things that have become redundant and others items that are becoming increasingly important. One of the more ‘major’ additions I made [...]

A Closer Look at Woodland Scenic’s Roadbed

Woodland Scenic’s roadbed is too wide. For the past year I’ve been staring at the rails on the NES, and now the WGR, trying to figure out why the track seems so crude and toy like. Originally I presumed it was because of rail size - having used code 80 on the NES. I changed rail [...]

WHRC Videos - Part Two

Here are some more videos of the WHRC in action. I've also updated the earlier post to include preview images of the videos. [MEDIA=5] [MEDIA=6] [MEDIA=8] [MEDIA=9]

WHRC Videos - Part One

The WGR is progressing slowly - and that which is being done isn't really worth a feature here. In an effort to maintain some sort of publishing regime, I'm going to start uploading a series of videos of the Windsor Hantsport Railway Company. I want to extend a huge thank you to Kim "Grizzz" Little - [...]

Bridge Building Part One

Progress has been steady and I’ve completed the basic structure for the first bridge. As mentioned, I’m attempting to pay better attention to non-train details - thus I’ve put a little more thought into this simple bridge then I would have in the past. I’ve decided to freelance the bridge design based on local examples, as [...]

Considering Bridges

Before I can proceed much further in the layout I need to finish the wiring, weather the track, and install the concrete bridges for the highway. My last layout taught me that while trains are number one, it’s important to give roads/houses/industries and their elevations equal thought. I have seen (and am guilty [...]

First Run and Basic Landscaping

Having completed the track I was eager to try running some trains. I had been rather cavalier when I installed the track work - not bothering to test each turnout etc., in favour of simply finishing the job. As such, I was eager to get trains running and see how I did. The verdict? I managed [...]
